Kentucky Film Production Tax Incentives

Kentucky offers robust tax incentives for movie production through the Kentucky Entertainment Incentive (KEI) Program. Here are the key details:

  1. Tax Credit Percentage: Productions can qualify for a fully refundable tax credit of 30-35% on qualified expenditures. This includes wages paid to cast and crew, rental fees for equipment and facilities, and other production-related costs.

  2. Minimum Spend Requirements:

    • Feature Films, TV Programs, and Industrial Films: A minimum in-state spend of $125,000 for Kentucky-based companies and $250,000 for out-of-state companies.

    • Documentaries: Minimum in-state spend of $10,000 for Kentucky-based companies and $20,000 for out-of-state companies.

    • National Touring Broadway Shows: Minimum in-state spend of $20,000 for both Kentucky-based and out-of-state companies.

  3. Annual and Project Caps:

    • The maximum tax credit available for any single project is $10 million.

    • The total annual cap for all projects is $75 million.
